Born Jerome Silberman into an assimilated Jewish family in Milwaukee, he was affectionately known as Jerry among his childhood friends. However, it was under the name Gene Wilder that he would captivate audiences worldwide, establishing himself as a beloved comic genius through an unparalleled series of film roles. From his portrayal of the timid Leo Bloom in Mel Brooks’ The Producers to the whimsical and enigmatic Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, Wilder’s performances only seemed to deepen in significance, humour, and humanity over time. His on-screen chemistry with Richard Pryor in films like Silver Streak and his comedic masterpieces such as Blazing Saddles, The Frisco Kid, and Young Frankenstein further solidified his status as a comedic icon.
In Ron Frank’s heartfelt biographical documentary, Wilder’s multifaceted talents as an actor, writer, director, and mensch are celebrated, with Wilder himself contributing narration through recordings from his memoir. Remembering Gene Wilder is a delightful homage, offering generous glimpses into Wilder’s illustrious career through film clips and heartfelt recollections from the likes of Mel Brooks, Carol Kane, Alan Alda, and Karen Wilder. Prepare to embark on a binge-watch of Wilder’s entire oeuvre — this tender and enlightening tribute is sure to leave you eager to revisit his timeless performances again and again.
