Inspired by real events in 1998, Holy Rollers tells the story of Sam Gold, a young Hassidic Brooklyn-Jew, who gets roped into smuggling ecstasy from Amsterdam to New York.
Sam feels trapped in a life that his parents have set out for him. His visible discontent with the Hassidic lifestyle makes him an easy target for his neighbor Yossi, who exploits Sam's innocence and desperation for the purposes of his new "business." Lured by the prospect of gelt, and most importantly, independence from his family, Sam unwittingly becomes Yossi's drug mule.
Sam is dragged deeper into a world that fundamentally clashes with the world in which he was raised and his double life becomes harder and harder to maintain. When his life as a smuggler threatens to fatally sever his ties to his family and the religious community, Sam is forced to make a choice between righteousness and licentiousness.
Nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Holy Rollers is a seamlessly crafted film that captures the subtle nuances of Hassidic life in Brooklyn. Asch is able to effortlessly lift the viewer into the world of his conflicted young protagonist. With noteworthy performances by Jessie Eisenberg ( Adventureland, The Squid and the Whale, Zombieland) and Justin Bartha (The Hangover, National Treasure: Book of Secrets). This film is not to be missed.
